Toshiba Satellite laptop power plug and power driver repair

Toshiba Satellite series are good laptops, but time shows that many of these suffer from two very common problems: a power jack failure and the more serious power driver failure. Both happen after a year's use and both render the laptop either unusable, or unstable at best.
Sofar I've heard of the following laptop models that suffer from these failures:
Toshiba Satellite A series (A45, A65, A75, A115 etc.),
Toshiba Satellite M series (M30, M35, M45...)
Toshiba Satellite L series (L35, L45...)
Of course, there are other laptops such as the HP NC series (6000, 8000, 9000 etc) that also suffer from this exact same problem.

Here are some of the symptoms:

  • Toshiba Satellite laptop does not boot
  • Toshiba Satellite laptop does not turn on at all
  • Fan spins up for a second and the laptop turns off
  • LEDs blink for a second and the laptop turns off
  • Toshiba Satellite laptop at power up makes a faint blink on the LCD and then shuts down
  • Toshiba Satellite laptop turns off sporadically without any warning, sometime works for hours and sometimes turns off minutes after bootup
Service centers approach this issue in two different ways. The Toshiba official centers just replace the motherboard, while the other service centers resolder the power plug. BUT, if the laptop suffers from the power driver failure (the laptop does not turn on at all, only LEDs blink for a second and that's it), then everybody goes for the new motherboard solution.
The problem for us is that we end up picking up the bill, which goes up to $300, which is too much. I've seen various adds on the net for a flat fee of up to $150 to just repair the power plug issue. The problem is that if your laptop suffers from a bad power plug, it's just a matter of time when the power driver chip will fail, which is only solved with a new motherboard, so basically you've thrown out $150.
I took a bit of a different approach, much cheaper and much faster. I got my dead Toshiba up and running in less than an hour.
Here's the story.

I owned a Toshiba Satellite m35 laptop that first had a bad power plug, and a few months after the laptop just stopped working alltogether. At each attempt to power up, the LEDs blinked, the CPU fan spinned up for a second, and that was it. No matter how many times I replaced the RAM, hard drive, CPU, the laptop refused to boot up. I couldn't even get to the Toshiba startup screen most of the times.
After almost a year of research, I figured out the problem and managed to fix it in under an hour. The fix consists of a good resolder of the power plug, and a resolder of the infamous Maxim power driver chip. After resoldering these two components, my Toshiba m35 was up and running and continued to do a good job afterwords.

I documented the entire repair process and wrote up an illustrated tutorial which has helped so many people and and had so many comments on my private blog that I decided to launch this new blog.
In this PDF tutorial you'll find the step by step guide and you'll learn exactly what needs to be done, and how to do it without any risk. There are two parts. First you'll learn how to do the repair on the Maxim power driver chip, and then, you'll learn how to professionally resolder the power plug (something that nobody does well on all the forums out there).
I have over 15 years of microelectronics repair experience, and I know that most of the repair technicians take shortcuts and their main goal is to get your money. The problem is that after a month or so, you'll end up with the same problem, going to the same techie, paying the same fee for the equally unprofessional service. With this tutorial you'll learn what it takes to make these two repairs in a professional manner, and even if you have never done any soldering, you will end up making a much better job than paying $150 for somebody else to do it for you.
So, to wrap up, here's the simple math:
It takes at least 1 hour to get to the closest service center, explain your problem and have your laptop processed and queued. Then it will take at least a day...or a week to get the techies to work on your laptop, and they will only treat the immediate issue, which solves half of your problem. At the end of the week, you end up with a working laptop that will break again in a matter of weeks, and a price tag of at least $150.
With this tutorial, once you get it in your inbox, you can have your laptop up and running in about an hour.
You'll also receive a study pack that repair technicians use to get the CompTIA A+ certificate, which in itself is worth more than what you pay for the tutorial, so you really get a lot of bang for the bucks.

    Hvala unapred
    Zeljko.

    Hello

For a while now, I've been having problems with the mother board of the Toshiba's M35X model. The laptop is completely functional except for the backlight of the monitor.
When I connect an external monitor(a TFT one) to the laptop, it works fine. When I switch back to the laptop's monitor, the baclight doesn't work(never did)-though the picture shows.

I figured the inverter is not getting any power from the mother board, i.e. the connector. Do you know through which chip (mos fet) does the inverter get the power for the backlight?

    Thank you,
    Zeljko

  2. Zeljko, I'd first aim at the inverter itself and see if that's OK, and after that I'd shoot at the backlight itself. I haven't heard of this maifestation of power issues with the m35, although knowing that the Maxim 1987 is the switchboard for the entire laptop, I'd also suggest resoldering it just to be on the safe side. For an inverter repair I posted this text http://imateski.blogspot.com/2008/01/lcd-suddenly-died.html maybe this can be the problem with your laptop also.
Post your results and we'll take it from there.
